Kirin J Callinan does his thing. He does it different each time, but there are recurring themes. The solo songs, the songs with backing band (different personnel each time), the brooding, awkward banter, and the inevitable removal of his shirt. This time was better than most others. His band featured Shags Chamberlain, like pretty much every other band at Melbourne Music Week. It also featured Vince from Midnight Juggernauts dressed up like an Eastern European general for some reason. The lights beamed out from old junked up cars littered across the expansive environs.
Forces hadn’t performed in Melbourne for a while. Tonight they’re primed with new material from a forthcoming 12”. Second track in, Overland hit with dance-commanding immediacy. The signature vocal effects hit some technical difficulties during World In Focus, but the ice-cold duo managed to carry on and avoid a terminal halt. Technical bullshit aside, Forces are well on track for a big 2013 breakthrough.
While the novel location did generate an immersive atmosphere, the PA proved to be a bit of a misfire for the low-end of Forces somewhat. But its weakness was exacerbated when duo Gatekeeper took to the stage. Despite terrific strobing and smoke effects, the music failed to resonate at a reasonable volume.
