Over the past three years King Cannons have journeyed far and wide, relocating throughout New Zealand, the United Kingdom and finally settling into their current home of Melbourne. Welcome additions to our ever flourishing local music scene, King Cannons are a constantly evolving six piece. They create ferocious rock and roll, underpinned with a love for punk and roots, weaved effortlessly together with their love and passion for wild and untamed music.
Following a somewhat enigmatic year, lead vocalist Luke Yeoward shares where 2010 has taken the ‘Cannons. “We started off the year playing some really kick-arse shows, playing a few headlines shows and a few support slots. After that we somewhat fell of the radar as far as live performances go; we’ve done a few here and there but we’ve been really busy doing work behind the scenes for the upcoming EP. We’re coming back now though and we can’t wait to get back on the stage”.
The resulting self-titled EP is a vicious and meticulous record. Fast, firm and unforgiving, King Cannons have undoubtedly mastered the distinctive sound they’ve been formulating the past few years. “The quality of the recordings and all the intricacies of the technical side of the EP have improved a lot. The majority of the songs on there have been King Cannons’ songs for the last couple of years, ones that we wrote ages ago and have always been playing. We thought it was finally time to get them recorded and released. It’s really nice to have them properly distributed now instead of us just burning CDs in our lounge room and throwing a few stickers on them” laughs Yeoward modestly.
“We were intending to use the original recordings that we had but we actually lost the original session and were forced to record them all again. We found out that we had to do that only a day before we had to head into the studio. We went in there and banged ‘em out and it felt really good. We were able to iron out a few creases and pour in more excitement and influences that we wouldn’t have been able to do before.
“So we’ve got all that older stuff and a brand new track that we wrote earlier this year called Take The Rock, it’s a really grungy sort of number. Most of the influences for the EP are taken from life in general and what happens around us, which sounds really cheesy, but it’s true. Musically we are taking influence from everything from rock, reggae, blues, hip hop and everything in between.”
King Cannons are renowned for their slick and powerful live performances. Incorporating their commanding productions, inspired showmanship and a pure love for performing. “I like to think that people can come away from a King Cannons performance feeling excited,” Yeoward muses. “We play like our lives depend on it because to be completely honest, it does. I think the way we play really translates well to the crowd.
”Our lyrics are relatable to everyday life and connecting with an audience is a really exciting thing. It’s a blur to be completely honest. Big shows and little shows all blend into one. I take off my glasses and play some fucking rock and roll.”
King Cannons are making their long awaited return to a Melbourne stage this November for their Take The Rock tour, and promise fans a powerful and exceptional show that rings true to the King Cannons ethos. “I think people can definitely expect a similar standard to our previous tours. We’re going to throw out a few surprises and lay down some new numbers and chuck in the odd tribute track to other artists.
“We don’t buy into theatrics,” he adds. “What you see is what you get and we really approach our shows with a ‘These are our fucking songs and this is how we’re going to play them’ attitude. That’s pretty much it it’s a really straight up thing.”
KING CANNONS hit The East Brunswick Club on Thursday November 25 with The Level Spirits and Johnnie & The Johnnie Johnnies. Take The Rock , the debut single from the King Cannons EP is hitting radio stations nationwide and the limited edition 10’ vinyl EP will be available on December 11.
