Keith Urban reveals lively new video, ‘Out the Cage’, featuring Chic’s Nile Rodgers

The video was shot in Sydney last year.

Keith Urban has just revealed a new video for ‘Out the Cage’ – the lively opening track from his 2020 album, THE SPEED OF NOW Part 1, featuring contributions from Chic’s Nile Rodgers and emerging US songwriter Breland.

Behind Urban’s familiar acoustic guitar and country sensibilities, some alternate inspirations come to the fore. If you listen closely to the track’s frenetic rhythm, you’ll find influences you mightn’t expect from Urban.

“‘Out the Cage’ began with an idea I had to build upon a ’90s English house breakbeat rhythm; I’ve always loved [The] Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, those kinds of rhythmic energies,” Urban says of the track.

The drum machine at the song’s base drives its helter skelter pace – the strong foundation allowing the vocals and other instrumentals to go to work.

The video, shot by Urban and Breland in Sydney last year following a two-week quarantine, is joyous and liberating, capturing the two dancing away as the rapidly-cutting visuals mimic the song’s intensity.

Rodgers features in segments, with the legendary songmaster shooting his clips from Connecticut.

“I really wanted this song to speak to liberation of all sorts, even if that’s somebody in a dead-end job, somebody that’s stuck in a relationship that’s going nowhere and they can’t get out, someone imprisoned in their own mind.” Urban says.

Urban will be touring Australia at the end of 2021. Commencing on Wednesday December 1 in Newcastle, Urban will make his way down the east coast, before arriving in Melbourne for two shows at Rod Laver Arena on Friday December 10 and Saturday December 11.

The celebrated songwriter will be bringing Birds of Tokyo along for the ride.
