Hey Melbourne, the Westgate Park lake has turned pink again

westy.jpg

The salt lake turns a shade of bright pink when a perfect trifecta of temperature, sunlight and low rainfall combine to turn the lake the colour of a plum that’s been left out in the sun for a little too long.

“Algae growing in the salt crust at the bottom of the lake produces the red pigment (beta carotene) as part of its photosynthesis process and in response to the extremely high salt levels,” said Parks Victoria via Facebook.

By all means, go check it out. Maybe even get a few shots for your Instagram story. Don’t go jumping in though. That doesn’t come highly recommended.
