Hallelujah! The Book of Mormon is back in Melbourne and it’s still a revelation

The Book of Mormon
words by staff writer

Broadway's most irreverent, outrageous musical comedy The Book of Mormon is back in Melbourne, playing at the Princess Theatre until the end of June.

Beloved by critics and audiences across the globe, The Book of Mormon has cemented its place as one of the most celebrated musicals of the modern era.

After a sold-out Sydney season, it’s back on home turf, and if Melbourne’s 2015 debut is anything to go by, this one’s going to go fast.

That original season broke the record for the highest-selling on-sale period in the Princess Theatre’s 159-year history, and also took home the Helpmann Award for Best Musical.

Created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone — the duo behind South Park — alongside two-time EGOT winner Robert Lopez, The Book of Mormon follows a mismatched pair of missionaries despatched on a mission to somewhere about as far from Salt Lake City as imaginable.

What unfolds is two-plus hours of gleefully irreverent, laugh-out-loud theatre that pushes every boundary it can find. Nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, plus a Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album, back up what audiences across the world have been saying for years.

Leading the Australian cast is Sean Johnston (Hairspray) as the charmingly self-important Elder Price, with Nick Cox (Beauty and the Beast) as geeky scene-stealer Elder Cunningham.

Paris Leveque plays Nabulungi, Tom Struik (Sister Act the Musical) steps in as Elder McKinley, Simbarashe Matshe (Filthy Business) takes on Mafala Hatimbi, Augie Tchantcho reprises his role as The General, and Matthew Hamilton (Tina – The Tina Turner Musical) rounds out the company as Mission President. It’s a strong ensemble doing justice to one of the sharpest, silliest scores ever written for a stage.

Content warnings: The Book of Mormon contains explicit language and content, strobe lighting, flashing lights, smoke, haze, gunshots and effects.

Runtime is approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes including a 20-minute interval.
