Seemingly out of nowhere, Sydney’s Green Buzzard came into our consciousness courtesy of tastemakers I OH YOU. After releasing three singles, the band now have a more substantial body of work to showcase in the form of their debut EP, Easy Queezy Squeezy.
Opening track Diggin’ A Hole sounds like a more distorted take on Sgt. Peppers-era Beatles. The lyric, “You were always acting far too cool for me,” sets the tone for an EP laced with romantic laments delivered via Paddy Harrowsmith’s nonchalant vocals. Lead single (I Don’t Wanna) Break Your Heart pairs jagged guitars with a repeating keyboard note, creating garage rock perfection. The song has it all, from earnest lyrics to a solemn breakdown and a catchy as hell chorus. Crystal Eyes feels half-baked in comparison, although the lyric, “You’ll be my demise, you devil in disguise,” more than makes up for this.
Frequency Overload gets to the point quickly, and its stop-start instrumentation keeps listeners on their toes. Green Time has a bittersweet feel that’s accentuated by Harrowsmith’s airy vocals, and it ends with the EP’s most impressive guitar solo. The final track Motorcars & Jaguars sounds like a classic in the making, fading out with the promise that Green Buzzard will be back with something bigger and better on their next release.
Easy Queezy Squeezy serves as the perfect taster of a band still establishing their sound, while also cementing Green Buzzard as a band to keep an eye on.
