Grab your coats, snatch your hats! What’s on at the Motley Bauhaus this August

The folks at the Motley Bauhaus have quite the steamy affair cooking.

They’ve got a gallery, two bar spaces, and a whole range of workshops and other community-based events that are always happening. They’re also planning on installing arcade games shortly and will be engaging with up-and-coming game developers to give them a space to showcase their work.

That’s not all that makes the Motley special though. They represent a dying breed, an independently owned space entirely for the purpose of nurturing creativity and artistry, and at the same time fostering a healthier community, across all disciplines. As a symbol of this, they’re set to launch a fundraiser soon to build an elevator in the venue, to enhance their accessibility, something they tell us they’re “deeply passionate and excited about”.

So come down! Whether you’re set on learning something, or if you just want a change of pace and maybe a bit of an escape from the day to day, the Motley is the place for you.

  • Friday, August 16th
  • w/ Hannie Day
  • Get tickets here.

August 16th marks the end of hiatus and the arrival of the oh-so-lovely Charlotte Bridie, who produces a unique brand of indie-folk akin to the likes of Angie McMahon, Julia Jacklin, and artists of that ilk. Expect heart-breakingly sincere stories and beautiful melodies that just seem to cascade over each other like water. Truly beautiful stuff.

Phoenix Street

  • Saturday, August 17th
  • Get tickets here.

The 17th marks the hotly anticipated Motley debut of Phoenix Street, a band that has been making waves inn the local scene. Known for their keen ears and innate ability to jump between genres, they’ve been dazzling their way through audiences for a little while now, and this night won’t soon be one to forget. With echoes of U2 and RHCP in their toolbox, they don’t hesitate when jumping between ideas.

Whisky’s Gin Rummy

  • Every Saturday
  • Free!

If you aren’t ready to go the Full Monty and jump head-first into a proper cabaret show, then this is the night for you! As the band packs up, and the bulk of the patrons file out, those left are met with the aroma of fine whisky, and maybe a hint of smokiness, gunpowder perhaps. Then, as one closes their eyes, a miraculous thing will happen, as you’re transported into the past upon opening them. With a storm like this brewing, there’s really no telling which way things are going to go.

The Big HOO HAA!

  • Every Saturday

Step into the colosseum of improv comedy, as two teams, the Hearts and the Bones, battle it out for the keys to the laugh-dom, for our viewing pleasures. These courageous warriors won’t stop at anything to be the last comedy troupe standing, though it won’t be easy for them. Armed with only a handful of props, and at the mercy of the audience, it could be anyone’s game. Get amongst it!

Quintet Concoction are a rare type of ensemble, bringing together only the most skilled of musicians for one reason and one reason only. This six-piece will knock your socks off, combining the rare energy and hunger of an up-and-coming band with the storied experience and technicality of players many, many years their senior. If not anything else, it surely is a sight to behold when these cats flip and dip in and around melodies and motifs, functioning together as one well-oiled machine. Alright!
