Melbourne's cosmic rock fusion outfit Glass Beams are set to headline a massive free concert at Fed Square next month, marking their final Australian appearance before hitting the Coachella stage.

The enigmatic masked trio, who’ve rocketed to global acclaim through their seamless blend of Western electronics and Indian classical instruments, will bring their psychedelic-funk experience to the city centre as part of Asia TOPA’s opening celebrations.

Glass Beams have cultivated a devoted following since emerging with their 2021 EP Mirage, while their recent release Mahal has seen them explode across streaming platforms and social media. The project, spearheaded by founding member Rajan Silva, creates lyric-less compositions that pay homage to Silva’s Indian heritage while pushing into fresh sonic territory.

The landmark show continues Fed Square’s impressive run of free concerts, following recent performances by Robbie Williams and Caribou that drew crowds exceeding 20,000. The venue’s Open Air program will also feature upcoming shows from Mildlife, Sun Ra Arkestra, Peach PRC, and more.

MAP Co Director and CEO Katrina Sedgwick highlighted the significance of securing Glass Beams before their international festival circuit begins, while Asia TOPA Creative Director Jeff Khan emphasised how the fusion act perfectly represents the festival’s celebration of Asia-Pacific arts.

The block party-style event will feature additional performances from Japanese-born, Melbourne-based artist Shio and experimental Tokyo pop group Tam Tam, alongside international DJs throughout the evening. The atmosphere promises to be immersive and culturally rich, with the band’s signature cyclical riffs and mesmerising melodies floating through the Square on what’s predicted to be a balmy summer evening.

Fed Square’s broader summer program includes Candlelight Concerts featuring Soli, Teeks and Ross Wilson and The Peaceniks, the annual Afro-Caribbean Carnival, and performances by Carla Wehbe and George Alice.

Tickets: Free entry, no booking required. For more information visit fedsquare.com
