Gift Horse is Celia Pacquola at her sharpest, funniest and most ruthless

Words by Mikey Cahill

The c-bomb is a powerful tool for a comedian. Used sparingly it can level a room and have an audience in raptures.

Celia Pacquola knows this. She detonates the ultimate swear word once, gloriously, near the start of her show when talking about a seemingly innocuous-but-unwise physical move her boyfriend made on her and – BAM – the Comedy Theatre rocks sideways.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around Melbourne here.

It’s all the more funnier knowing a majority of Pacquola fans would know her from more PG roles in TV shows such as Rosehaven and Utopia.

Pacquola relishes the moment, juts her face forward, arches her eyebrows and cracks on with a ripping show with a steady, heady pace.

She never goes easy on her Irish fella and his ambitious gift giving choices, nor his belief she is his best friend. Themes of ageing, motherhood and the merits of outdoor recreational activities are woven through Gift Horse with the skill of a true raconteur.

Her take on kayaking is damning and succinct: “It’s like going for a walk…with your arms.”
