Meet Gertrude Saturdays.
There’s a new festival coming to Gertrude Street set to reignite a neighbourhood floored by the COVID-19 pandemic. Each Saturday in December, Gertrude Saturdays will bring music, food, surprise art and various coordinated promotions to the area to help stimulate local businesses hampered by the COVID downturn.
In normal times, Gertrude Street is a popular precinct for music, food and entertainment, standing alongside the Brunswick Streets, High Streets, Chapel Streets and Sydney Roads for its contribution to Melbourne’s cultural fabric.
Head along to Gertrude Saturdays and expect to see a dynamic festival setup offering punters various discounts, music and art activations as well as a number of surprise performances. To align with COVID-safe protocols, the festival won’t adhere to any set schedule and performers will rotate in short bursts in order to minimise large gatherings.
Most notably, Northside Records will host a bunch of DJs from their shop window while costumier Rose Chong will be draping performers in fresh getups across the day. On the food front, Fatto A Mano will be dishing out goodie bags for hungry passersby eager to get involved. That’s just the start.
Gertrude Saturdays has materialised after a bunch of businesses along the street received a Precinct Recovery Grant from the City of Yarra in the wake of COVID-19.
