Genesis Owusu is bringing a seven-city pirate radio tour to Australia this May

Words by staff writer

The Ghanaian-Australian artist will hit stages across the country this May in support of Redstar Wu & the Worldwide Scourge

Genesis Owusu is taking his Red Star Wu’s Pirate Radio Tour across seven Australian cities this May behind a brand new album.

The acclaimed artist will be touring in celebration of his third studio record, Redstar Wu & the Worldwide Scourge, which lands on 15 May via OURNESS. Owusu has carved out a reputation as one of the country’s most captivating live performers, known for high-octane sets that blur the edges of concert, performance art and full-blown rallying cry. Across two previous albums, he’s racked up seven ARIA Awards, including two Album of the Year wins.

The run kicks off at Newcastle’s Bar On The Hill on 14 May as part of Great Southern Nights, a NSW Government and ARIA initiative spanning more than 300 gigs across Sydney and New South Wales from 1–17 May. Owusu will then celebrate the album’s actual release date in his hometown of Canberra, before winding through Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth across the rest of the month.

Frontier Members can grab early access via presale from 20 March at midday local time, with general tickets on sale from 23 March at midday local time.

On the new record, Owusu threads neo-soul into alt-pop, synth-punk into deep funk, with nods to brit-rock scattered throughout. It’s described as an exposed state-of-the-day work, carving raw human emotion into song across a restless and eclectic sonic palette. Rich in lyricism and unflinching in its message, the album confronts a divisive era with a resolute call for unity.

Owusu first turned heads with his 2021 debut Smiling with No Teeth, a genre-defying collision of funk, punk urgency and sharp hip-hop. His 2023 follow-up Struggler continued pushing boundaries as a bold concept record. Between the two albums, he’s shared stages with the likes of Tame Impala, Paramore and IDLES, and performed at Lollapalooza, Primavera Sound, Austin City Limits Music Festival, Mad Cool Festival and Boston Calling.

Now armed with a third album and an ever-evolving creative vision, Owusu returns to home soil for what’s shaping up as one of the most electric tours of the year.
