The artist will take the stage at the Brunswick Ballroom on December 15 for an acoustic set.

You couldn’t have a conversation about Aussie rock without mentioning Gareth Liddiard. From forming the Drones in the late ’90s to traversing the globe with the cult favourite experimental group Tropical Fuck Storm, he’s got his fingerprints all over the past two decades of the local scene.

In just over a week, he’ll be playing a one-off show at the Brunswick Ballroom, “so he can afford to buy Christmas presents for his children”. Widely considered one of the country’s best songwriters, Liddiard will be supported by his Melbourne-based alt-rock contemporary, Michael Beach.

Gareth Liddiard’s resume speaks for itself. After working as a lighting technician for concerts in Perth, he was inspired to form the foundational garage rock group, the Drones. For their second album, he penned the moody anthem Shark Fin Blues, which was voted the greatest Australian song of all time in 2009.

He then went on to form Tropical Fuck Storm with the Drone’s bassist, Fiona Kitschin. A little psychedelic and a whole lot experimental, the group gained notoriety for their genre-bending sound, high-energy performances and fearless songwriting.

In 2010, he released a stripped-down solo album, titled Strange Tourist. His most recent work is as a member of the art rock supergroup Springtime – their eponymous 2021 album was recorded in his home studio on his estate in Nagambie, Victoria.

Throughout his whole body of work, Liddiard’s unmatchable creative spirit rings clear. Fans are sure to feel it up close and personal at the December show, where the artist will showcase some of his best work in a raw, acoustic set.
