It’s a genre-bending six-track journey from the Sydney outfit.
Sydney garage rockers The Dolphin Show have just released their frenetic second EP, Thick Black Brain Blood. Through the six-track release, the band use their prog, doom and punk influences as a springboard to deliver a record that is largely multi-faceted.
From the helter skelter punk explosion that is ‘Fuck off Dad’ to the wandering instrumental adventure ‘Switcharoo’ and the record’s title track, ‘Thick Black Brain Blood’, which takes listeners on a twisted six-minute journey, the EP navigates many corners of the historical songbook.
The Dolphin Show began working on Thick Black Brain Blood in 2019 with the ambition to challenge themselves and push the boundaries. Championing their heavy live sound and unpredictable songwriting, Thick Black Brain Blood is a record for listeners who enjoy the thrill of surprise and aren’t afraid to extend their palette.
“We felt that prior to this EP, that we hadn’t really worked hard enough and had underachieved. So, when we were in there recording Thick Black Brain Blood, it felt right and exciting to give it our all,” the band’s lead vocalist Will Badger says. “Recording these songs gave us a realisation of the sound that we could make, our unique sound. It made us feel real.”
You could say Thick Black Brain Blood is The Dolphin Show’s magnum opus to this point – an adventurous pivot for a band quickly coming into their own.
