Free doughnuts as Melbourne institution hits 75 sweet years

The city's beloved American Doughnut Kitchen is celebrating 75 years of hot jam doughnuts in Melbourne.

Since 1950, American Doughnut Kitchen has been serving up the most iconic treat in Melbourne at Queen Victoria Market. Their famous hot jam doughnuts have become synonymous with market visits, drawing queues of eager customers (including me, I can’t resist) every market day who line up for those golden, sugar-dusted delights.

American Doughnut Kitchen has maintained the same recipe for three quarters of a century, ensuring each delightful doughy goodness delivers that nostalgic taste that generations of Melburnians have come to love. The business has evolved under third-generation co-owner Belinda Donaghey, who opened their first permanent storefront at Prahran Market in July 2024.

To mark this milestone, American Doughnut Kitchen is offering free doughnuts to early birds in Melbourne. The first 75 customers at both venues will receive a complimentary bag of five original hot jam doughnuts on Friday morning, with additional spot prizes and surprises planned throughout the celebration.

Donaghey reflects on the significance of reaching 75 years in Melbourne, emphasising how the business continues to bring joy and nostalgia to customers while adapting to modern times. The expansion to Prahran Market represents a new chapter for the family business, balancing innovation with respect for their grandfather’s original vision.

“We’re so honoured to have made it to 75 years. We’re proud to produce a treat that has truly stood the test of time, while continuing to adapt and innovate as the years roll on. At the end of the day, we bring a little bit of joy and nostalgia to people’s lives – and I think that’s what keeps people coming back,” she said.

American Doughnut Kitchen’s enduring success in Melbourne stems from their commitment to quality and tradition. Each doughnut is still made fresh using the 1950s recipe, creating that perfect combination of crispy exterior and fluffy interior that has kept customers returning for decades.
