This one has been a long time coming. Before Footscray Community Arts moved in back in 1974, the riverside site was an industrial and livestock hub, and that past turned up during groundworks when builders found old industrial materials buried beneath the lawn and amphitheatre.
The discovery meant unexpected costs and delays, and the organisation set a $70,000 fundraising target by 15 October to finish the last stage of construction.
That final stretch covers accessible pathways, native plantings to re-Indigenise the green space and a ceremonial fire bowl for First Nations community use.
Lango was built with investment from the Victorian government and Maribyrnong City Council, and MGS Architects designed the stage after consulting the organisation’s Indigenous Advisory Group and local communities.
Yorta Yorta, Wurundjeri and Wiradjuri artist Moorina Bonini is weaving her artwork into the landscape and architecture, while Simone Bliss Landscape Architects handled the wider landscaping.
The opening also lines up with 50 years of Footscray Community Arts.
