Footscray gains new 2.5km elevated dedicated bike bath to CBD

Footscray
words by staff writer

A new 2.5km dedicated bike path from Footscray is now open, connecting Melbourne's west with the city.

The Dixon Veloway offers cyclists a safer express route from Footscray to the CBD, suspended between the new elevated roadway along Footscray Road. Running from Shepherd Bridge in Footscray to the city side of Moonee Ponds Creek, the bright-green path links into the Federation Trail and creates a two-lane, dedicated off-road route.

Completely separated from traffic, The Dixon Veloway removes the need for cyclists to cross six busy intersections. It’s a Victorian first; a suspended bike path built exclusively for riders looking to avoid the chaos of sharing roads with cars and trucks during their commute.

Measuring four metres wide, the veloway includes 24/7 CCTV monitoring, access for emergency vehicles, alarmed exits and extensive lighting throughout. Safety features have been designed to give riders peace of mind at any time of day or night, whether they’re commuting to work or heading home after dark.

The Dixon Veloway takes its name from Australian Hall of Famer and Victorian cycling legend Iris Dixon, who passed away in recent years. Dixon was one of Australia’s most successful female cyclists, beginning her racing career as a 14-year-old in 1945 before winning 16 Australian and 25 Victorian titles across track and road cycling.

Her trailblazing achievements helped pave the way for future generations of Australian cyclists, making her an apt namesake for this new piece of cycling infrastructure. The veloway represents a significant upgrade for Melbourne’s cycling network, offering a dedicated space that prioritises rider safety and convenience over shared paths or painted bike lanes that force cyclists to navigate alongside vehicles.

Riders can now enjoy an uninterrupted journey between the west and the CBD without stopping at intersections or worrying about car traffic. It’s designed to make cycling a more viable option for commuters while honouring one of Victoria’s greatest sporting pioneers.
