Five local bands, one stage, zero mercy: Bergy Bandroom’s Battle of the Bands is on

Bergy Bandroom
words by Frankie Anderson-Byrne

Brunswick's Bergy Bandroom is gearing up to host the first heat of Battle of the Bands 2026, and things are about to get competitive.

Heat 1 of Bergy Bandroom Battle of the Bands 2026 brings together five local acts; The Mods, Midnight Violet, The Tommies, Swordfish and The Robbies, for what promises to be a big night of live music in Brunswick.

The crowd plays a role here too, with attendee turnout helping to determine which acts progress through to the Grand Final once all five heats wrap up.

As for who’s taking the stage, the five acts couldn’t be more different.

The Mods are a genre-hopping four-piece from regional Victoria who blend rock, jazz, alt-folk, pop and psychedelia, and have already racked up festival appearances and battle of the bands wins since forming in high school music class in 2022.

Midnight Violet are a Melbourne indie-folk quintet drawing influence from Mazzy Star, Leonard Cohen and Elliott Smith, with a debut EP already under their belt and a full-length album in the works.

The Tommies are a Melbourne rock four-piece who burst onto the Brunswick scene in 2025 with a sold-out debut show at The Brunswick Green; the sibling songwriting duo of Xavier and Duncan Brodie bring contrasting influences to the table, with Xavier’s Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley leanings colliding with Duncan’s Springsteen and Clash-inspired riff-driven style, rounded out by bassist George Scott and drummer and producer Lachy Oliver.

Swordfish are a five-piece indie alt-funk outfit based in Naarm, bringing a whole different energy to the night.

And rounding things out, The Robbies are a queer punk-alternative act who shift seamlessly from high-octane punk through to slower, more vulnerable moments.

Tickets are on sale now, so grab yours before Heat 1 fills up and miss out on being part of deciding who makes it through to the Grand Final.

Major sponsors Coopers and Beat Magazine are backing the whole competition, with additional support coming from The Aviary Recording Studio, Fellr, Heaps Normal and the Real Songwriters of Melbourne.
