Fed Square’s gothic horror screening pushed back by wild weather

Words by staff writer

Melbourne's weather has done what Melbourne's weather does best — thrown a spanner in the works.

Fed Square’s Silent Cinema with Live Scores screening of The Fall of the House of Usher (1928) has been rescheduled due to heavy rain and wind expected this evening.

The screening, which was set for 17 February as part of Fed Square’s free Open Air at the Square summer program, will now take place on 25 February at 8pm in the Main Square. The event pairs Jean Epstein’s haunting adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s classic gothic horror tale with a brand new live DJ score by Melbourne selector Emelyne, blending post-punk, trip-hop, jungle and industrial techno with classical undertones.

Silent Cinema with Live Scores

  • 18 February — The Adventurer (1917) and Modern Times (1936), with live score by Sally Ford and the Idiomatics, 8pm, Main Square, Fed Square
  • 19 February — The General (1926), with live score by Blue Grassy Knoll, 8pm, Main Square, Fed Square
  • 20 February — The Goddess (1934), with live score by Mindy Meng Wang and Burkhard Dallwitz, 8pm, Main Square, Fed Square

The rest of the Silent Cinema with Live Scores program remains unaffected. The weeklong series showcases celebrated silent films from Australia, the US, Europe and China, each accompanied by original live scores from local DJs and some of the country’s leading musician-composers.

All screenings are free and open to all ages.

Emelyne is a staple of Melbourne’s underground electronic scene, known for her work as co-host and producer of The Blend on PBS 106.7FM and her deep-cutting selections across bass music, dub, broken beat and experimental electronica. She’s also held key roles behind the scenes at festivals including Strawberry Fields, Meredith and Golden Plains.
