This holiday season, Melbourne’s iconic Fed Square is set to become the city’s centre of Christmas cheer, offering a month-long program of free festive activities from November 29 to December 31.
The vibrant celebration includes 34 events aimed at bringing together people from all backgrounds to enjoy the holiday spirit as part of the City of Melbourne’s Christmas Festival.
The festivities kick off on November 29 with the Christmas Launch event, featuring live performances, face painting, and the ceremonial lighting of the spectacular 17.5-meter Christmas tree. Visitors can capture family photos among beautiful decorations, including a light-up bell swing installation, in the transformed Christmas Square.

On December 12, for the first time, Fed Square will live-stream The Nutcracker by The Australian Ballet directly from the Sydney Opera House to its big screen, offering a magical ballet experience under the open sky.
Other December highlights include Koorie Krismas on December 14, hosted by the Koorie Heritage Trust, where families can enjoy live music, dance, and shop for unique holiday gifts from First Peoples artists.
Movie lovers can relax with free outdoor screenings of Christmas classics like It’s a Wonderful Life and Elf from December 16 to 23, while a life-sized snow globe will pop up from December 16 to 18, providing a unique photo opportunity for visitors.
As Camp as Christmas returns on December 20, presenting a vibrant, queer celebration featuring performances from artists like The Huxleys and Nefertiti LaNegra.
For last-minute shoppers, Fed Square will stay open for Late Night Shopping on December 12 and 19, with gifts from First Nations and local artisans, along with complimentary gift wrapping.
To ring in the New Year, Fed Square will host a lively New Year’s Eve bash with Melbourne’s top DJs and one of the best views of the city’s fireworks display.
