South African zef rap rave crew Die Antwood set to shock tonight.
In the past year South Africa has gifted the world with two things – namely the vuvuzela (that horn that sounds like a hive of angry bees made famous at the FIFA World Cup) and rap/rave/zef crew, Die Antwoord.
Die Antwoord is fronted by Ninja, the alter ego of ex-Max Normal frontman, Waddy Jones – a character birthed from the Cape Flats of Cape Town in 2008. After the underground cult success of hip hop groups such as The Original Evergreens and Max Normal, Jones took the obvious next step in his career and formed Die Antwoord, along with his wife (and mother of their child named "Sixteen"), Yolandi Vi$$er and the mysterious DJ Hi-Tek.
The video for their single, Enter The Ninja, hit Youtube in late 2009 but it wasn’t until March last year that the video became a viral phenomenon. The video racked up over a million hits in days with stars such as Fred Durst and Katy Perry professing their undying love for the group on Twitter.
Fast forward a few months later and Die Antwoord are currently enjoying their first ever tour of Australia where they’ve been wowing fans and self proclaimed "zeflings" on the stages of Big Day Out. Tonight they’ll be headlining at Prince Bandroom in St. Kilda alongside support acts Mafia and Bangs.
Doors for the show tonight, Wednesday February 2 open at 8pm and tickets are $55+BF. Tickets are available at princebandroom.com.au or in person at all Moshtix outlets.
