Sahul Sakti is fast becoming one of Melbourne’s most exciting jazz folk world improvisation ensembles. After launching in July 2023 at the Bar 303, we’re excited to be throwing an end of year party at Cafe Gummo! Join us!
We’re delighted to welcome Capoeira ACDP Australia and members of Melbourne’s capoeira community to join us as our special guests and open the event. Our music draws heavily on capoeira (an Afro-Brazilian martial arts, dance, and music art form) and penchak silat (an Indo-Malay martial arts, dance, and music art form). As a matter of fact, our percussion instruments and the rhythmic basis of our music are from capoeira and penchak silat.
It’s with this in mind that we’ve decided to start with some beautiful capoeira songs from the capoeira community.
Then it’s over to us, and then we’ll come together an evening of song, music, before rounding off the evening with a capoeira-silat-music-dance jam. Who knows what the evening will bring?!

Sahul Sakti is an improvisation ensemble who draws on the members’ post-classical, Brazilian, Asia-Pacific, jazz, and experimental music influences to create a sound that is rooted in friendship, imagination, and a deep exploration of acoustic possibilities. This project is inspired by the great global fusion ensembles such as Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, Shakti, Dr. L Subramaniam, L. Shenkar, Nigel Kennedy, Mestre Accordeon, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
We are:
Huich Goh (violin), Michel Honegger (gendang and percussion effects), Calum Wakeling (bass), Rana Mitra (pandeiro, surdo)
