Emily Ulman brings Severe Clear to Brunswick for one-night-only album launch

Words by staff writer

Emily Ulman is launching her album Severe Clear with a one-night-only performance at Brunswick Ballroom on 27 November.

The Melbourne singer-songwriter has assembled a stellar band for what she’s calling a particularly special show that won’t be repeated.

” This is honestly a once in a lifetime, won’t be repeated, never to be seen or heard again, extra special, sparkly dazzly show,” she says. “I’m unlikely to play too many band shows after this one and instead you’ll find me working behind the scenes, writing and supporting and advocating for our local Aus artists.”

Ulman worked with producer Bonnie Knight on Severe Clear, an album she describes as feeling authentically her own. The launch will feature a full band including Hollie Joyce on guitar and vocals, Nick Hurle on keys, Royce Akers on bass, Dave Williams on drums and vocals, and Bryce Gilhome on guitar and vocals.

Severe Clear blends folk, acoustic and pop elements with striking emotional clarity, produced by Bonnie Knight and featuring collaborators including Gab Strum from Japanese Wallpaper. The album moves from intimate ballads to cinematic folk moments, all grounded in Emily’s rich, heart-first storytelling. From the shimmering title track to the delicate Every Hillside and footy-loving Fans in the Stands, Severe Clear is a collection that resonates with the same warmth, resilience and generosity Emily has poured into Melbourne’s music community throughout her career. You can read her track-by-track here.

This show marks a significant moment for Ulman, who’s indicated she’ll be stepping back from regular band performances after this launch. She plans to focus more on behind-the-scenes work, writing, supporting and advocating for local Australian artists moving forward.
