Droplet – the musical project of singer/songwriter and producer Demi Papazoglou – is shaking up the Melbourne music scene through a tirade of minimalist electronica that’s hard hitting when it needs to be and encompasses raw emotion at its highest points.
Humanimal shows a haunting vocal prowess transitioning to buzzsaw synths. It’s clear Papazoglou shines the brightest when she is at her most fierce. Brilliant harmonisation aids a repetitive piano melody that pays homage to electronic legends of the past. A watery synth with the gain on overdrive is the basis for Red Crayon, with touches of melodic pop elegance signified by what officially becomes a trademark for the vocals – stretched out, long notes that hit the mark perfectly.
Powerful Mind is a sampler’s dream, with a chorus so huge it sounds like it could be remixed into a German tech house banger, while ambience and dissonant synth chords add a touch of class to High.
I Don’t Want A War rounds out the EP with Papazoglou’s most interesting cut. The big drop underneath soaring vocals offers a statement rather than a question, and the recurring themes of self reflection that are present throughout this whole project are most prevalent within its dying moments.
