Don McLean's American Pie 50th Anniversary Tour will be coming to Australian shores next year

The iconic, multi-award-winning singer-songwriter Don McLean is touring Australia in early April next year, bringing in the era of lost innocence in rock n roll back to fruition.

His monumental hit song American Pie became a bittersweet ode to the tragic demise of music icons Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. Richardson.

Mclean is one of the most important artists to emerge from the US folk scene. From the age of 16, he showed unwavering interest in folk music and bought his first guitar.

Later in his life, after being rejected by various record labels, he finally made a big break with one that gave him a chance. In 1973, And I Love You So became a hit among the easy listening stations.

His song American Pie is a piece of American music history. The phrase ‘The Day Music Died’ was popularised by this song in relation to the deaths of music greats Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson.

Over the years, the song has been covered by various other musicians such as Madonna and Garth Brooks. Even rapper Drake has sampled Mclean’s work, and Tupac Shakur regarded him as a great influence.

While his discography over the years is considered a colossal feat, Mclean is still avidly writing new songs. Since his last album in 2020 Still Playin’ Favourites, he’s proved that he won’t be quitting writing new material for quite some time.

You can expect this tour to not only be a look back at his past successes, but also a newfound appreciation for the talent that remains in his songwriting genius.
