Located in the inner north, the writing and recording space hopes to be an "epicentre of artistic growth".

In a city so filled with bands and musicians, music spaces can feel hard to come by. As we get even more squeezed by the rising cost of living, many of us don’t have the proper space to make some noise.

Anyone who’s ever lived in a thin-walled apartment with a bassoonist as a neighbour knows exactly what I’m talking about.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

To help give musicians a place to practice and develop their work with a little more privacy, DMA’s guitarist Johnny Took has linked up with the Small Time Group’s Steve and Liz Hibberd to create Small Time Studios.

“I couldn’t be more excited to team up with my mate Steve on this journey that involves our mutual passion for music! Being able to use my love and experience of songwriting to provide a space for creativity is a dream come true,” says Took.

Long-time friends and music lovers, the partners came together to open the Brunswick space, which features three (soon to be four) writing rooms, one production studio and chill-out areas where musicians can mingle and collaborate.

The common areas include a pool table, a piano den, a small garden, a kitchenette, a rooftop patio and a bar stocked with local Bodriggy beer and Grainshaker vodka.

The studios will be stocked with all of the typical findings – a computer monitor, headphones, an interface and a condenser microphone. There will also be guitars, microphones and synthesizers available for rent if you’re not keen on bringing your own.

As is standard form, the writing rooms will be open for an afternoon and an evening session, going for $220 apiece. The larger production room may also be rented along with the common areas for listening parties, music videos and promo events.

“Small Time Studios has the infrastructure to be able to support and educate young musicians, a space like this holds so much potential and its location in the heart of Brunswick couldn’t be more perfect,” says Took.
