This June, Dark Mofo’s epic late night event Night Mass: Exstasia will break from the confines of the In The Hanging Garden precinct to use downtown Nipaluna/Hobart as a canvas.

With more than 13 stages across a sprawling 4500-capacity nightclub precinct across three city blocks over two weekends, the Night Mass audience will be endowed with many choices and paths; an array of experiences that feel exploratory, immersive and radical.

It will be a feast for the senses, offering art, music, performance, cocktail lounges, punk theatre, cinema cabarets, and junkyard raves colliding inside a sprawling metropolis dubbed District X, with fire beacons along with cosy spaces to eat and drink.

“Extasia embraces the notion of radical entropy and exultation; that primordial desire to assume a Dionysic state. We want the Night Mass audience to journey through it being surprised, delighted, disgusted, aroused and alarmed,” said Night Mass: Exstasia curator Mason Browne.

A variety of themed precincts include Walpurgisnacht (occupying Bidencopes Lane, Underground Cinema, The Grand Poobah),  The Boneyard (Watchorn Street and Car Park, Harrington Lane and Car Park), Urban Dystopia (Liverpool Street), Origins (Cathedral, In The Hanging Garden), Event Horizon (Odeon Theatre and its labyrinth) and Nachtlicker, a concept by Alex Podger (Altar, High Altar).

Within these iconic spaces, there will be immersive performances, cabaret, games arcades, tarot readings and plenty of intimate lounge spaces—to name a few.

Hundreds of artists including international stars, electronic producers, and roving performance artists across both festival weekends. Highlights include Desire Marea (ZAF), Marie Davidson (CAN), Pelada (CAN), dameeeela (AUS), OKENYO (AUS), Ms Boogie (USA), Prison Religion (USA), Sote & Tarik Barri (NL&IR), Moktar (AUS), Nooriyah (UK), SI Process (UKR), Varg2™ (SE),Violent Magic Orchestra (JP), Mahne Frame (AUS), Simona Castricum(AUS), Amnesia Scanner (FIN), and many more, with some surprise performances in the mix.
