Melbourne's Gasworks is hosting arthouse acrobatic circus Casting Off next month, presented by A Good Catch.
Casting Off is an all-female intergenerational acrobatic troupe that experiments with traditional circus structures, bringing a politically-charged feminist tone and proactive democratic outlook to their simultaneously dangerous and hilarious performances. They’ve won awards all around the world, and now they’re coming to Gasworks in Melbourne.
After the huge success of Gasworks’ other all-female acrobatic performance The Defiant throughout Midsumma, Casting Off will continue the miraculous feats of strength and agility, but add strong personality.
Casting Off dates and times
- Thursday 10 March, 7.30pm – 8.25pm
- Friday 11 March, 7.30pm – 8.25pm
- Saturday 12 March, 7.30pm – 8.25pm

According to A Good Catch, throughout the performance the personal is political, fury is fun and the acrobatics downright dangerous – especially when life gets in the way. Casting off stereotypes – see what they did there – these dynamic Australian women tumble, talk, fly, and balance precariously.
They’re an experienced cohort: forming in 2017 to create Bridges for the Mullumbimby Circus Festival, followed by Casting Off for the Circus Oz Sidesault at the Melba experimental circus festival.
Casting Off has since performed at Edinburgh, Adelaide and Melbourne Fringe Festivals, Bondi Feast and WA Circus Festival. It won the BankSA Best Circus & Physical Theatre Award at Adelaide in 2019, the Total Theatre & Jacksons Lane Award for Best Circus at Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2018, and the Best Circus at Melbourne Fringe 2018.
