Princess Chelsea is heading over with her seven-piece band The Dream Warriors for a run of east-coast shows this October, including a Melbourne stop.
Princess Chelsea is finally crossing the Tasman for her debut Australian shows, seven-piece band The Dream Warriors in tow.
A songwriter, producer and visual artist, Princess Chelsea has spent years building a world of her own out of Auckland, folding orchestral flourishes and off-kilter pop into a sound she calls baroque-pop. Her homemade music videos do half the work, handing her a DIY look that’s become instantly recognisable. For plenty of listeners she’s still the voice behind viral hit The Cigarette Duet, though the show has grown well past any one track.
The awards have piled up to match. She recently collected Best Alternative Artist at the New Zealand Music Awards, along with the Taite Music Prize, her country’s answer to the Mercury Prize. Runs through Europe, the United States and Mexico have earned The Dream Warriors a name as one of New Zealand’s most gripping live acts, with a set that’s performed start to finish without backing tracks and rarely lands where you’d guess.

The Melbourne date lands at The Thornbury Theatre on 3 October, one of the roomier spots in town for a show like this. It’s an 18+ affair, so plan accordingly.
Before that, Princess Chelsea kicks the tour off at the Lansdowne Hotel in Sydney on 1 October, then wraps at Yours & Owls Festival in Wollongong on 4 October. The whole run is presented by Yours & Owls, the outfit behind the festival and a string of independent venues dotted up the east coast.
There’s already a taste of what’s coming. The band recently filmed a live session inside Abbey Road Studios in London, cramming the famous Studio Two with hundreds of balloons and the kind of technicolour staging Princess Chelsea builds everything around. Expect that same over-the-top spirit to travel south.
