Pack your dancing shoes, because one of Cuba's most electrifying pianists is heading down under.
Grammy-nominated pianist Roberto Fonseca will bring his La Gran Diversión tour to Australia in March 2026. The Cuban music trailblazer last toured the country over a decade ago and returns to celebrate his critically acclaimed album alongside classics from his storied career.
Roberto Fonseca has spent more than 20 years as a major force in contemporary Cuban music. The pianist rose to global prominence performing with the Buena Vista Social Club before releasing multiple acclaimed solo albums including Zamazu in 2007, the Grammy-nominated YO in 2012 and ABUC in 2016. His genre-defying sound blends afro-Cuban roots with jazz, funk and global influences, featuring collaborations with icons like Omara Portuondo, Gilles Peterson, Ibrahim Ferrer, Baba Sissoko and Fatoumata Diawara.

Released in 2023, La Gran Diversión pays tribute to the golden era of Cuban music. Inspired by the legendary 1930s Parisian cabaret Cabane Cubaine, the album fuses infectious rhythms, dazzling horn sections and spellbinding piano melodies that invite audiences to dance and celebrate the joyful spirit of Cuba.
The son of Tropicana Club Cuban dancer Mercedes Cortes Alfaro and drummer Roberto Fonseca Senior, he made his debut at the La Havana Jazz Festival in Cuba at just 15 years old. Three decades later, Fonseca now serves as the festival’s artistic director. In 2019, he was appointed Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, the highest artistic distinction in France. In early 2025, Roberto Fonseca made his second appearance on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series, reaffirming his position as a global ambassador of Cuban music.
