Chastity Belt : I Used To Spend So Much Time Alone

The opening instrumentals of Different Now sound crisp as hell, which is surprising because this third full-length album was actually recorded live. The song itself is a clear statement of how times and people continually change, and perhaps somewhat self-reflective of the journey this four-piece has had since their smash debut album, No Regerts, in 2013.

Caught In A Lie uses vocal harmonies to create something haunting, especially for whomever the track was directed at. Lead singer Julia Shapiro’s vocals switch from vulnerable to playful at the drop of a hat, or sometimes strangely both at once. Case in point: This Time of Night.

Drummer, Gretchen Grimm, wrote and also provides vocals on Struck, which has a very ‘90s-grunge feel to it. It’s actually one of the best on the album.

Complain rolls along nicely but doesn’t offer anything new, while It’s Obvious goes a bit heavier, especially with the tempo change midway through.

The unpolished sound of the acoustic strings is a nice touch on What The Hell.

The album wraps up with Something Else, which opens strong and then lifts again before the chorus, slow-burner Used To Spend and 5am, a pop-punk crossbreed that ends on a high.
