Cat Power is returning to Australia to perform her 2006 album The Greatest in full at the Royal Botanic Gardens.
The Melbourne date lands as part of Live at the Gardens on 3 December, presented by MG Live, Love Police and Triple R. Across the night, Cat Power will play The Greatest from front to back, joined by tracks pulled from a catalogue that reaches back three decades.
Recorded in Memphis with members of the Hi Rhythm section, The Greatest saw Chan Marshall, who records as Cat Power, lean into a warm soul sound and bend it to her own shape. The album takes in songs such as Living Proof and its title track, and in 2007 it made Marshall the first woman to win the Shortlist Music Prize. To mark two decades, a 20th anniversary edition arrives on 10 July through Matador Records, with a re-print of the original pink foil artwork and a pressing on pink vinyl.

The Melbourne bill rounds out with US singer-songwriter Courtney Marie Andrews and local act Hedge Burners, who fold rock, country and punk into their sound. It all sits inside the fifth season of Live at the Gardens, the program that turns the Observatory Precinct into an inner-city venue each year through a partnership between MG Live and Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. UK band Wolf Alice and Australian trio DMA’S have already been locked in for the series, with more names still to come.
Presales open on 17 June at 9am local time for Live at the Gardens, MG Live and Love Police members, running for 47 hours or until the allocation runs dry. General tickets land on 19 June at 9am local time through Ticketmaster, with general admission priced at $119.90 plus a $5.95 handling fee per transaction.
