Brunswick open mic calls for your unfiltered heartbreak stories

brunswick
words by Meaghan Doherty

Sick of the love hearts and kisses? Dealing with a fresh breakup? No plans on the horizon for Valentine's Day? Check out this Anti-Valentine’s Day event coming to Brunswick.

The Moth, a non-profit organization based in New York that aims to promote the art and craft of storytelling as well as celebrate the diversity and commonality of human experience.

The Melbourne branch hosts an open mic storytelling event monthly where ten audience members are able to share a five minute personal, true story for the predetermined theme, live without notes.

Next Wednesday, the StorySLAM theme is their annual February choice LOVE HURTS. Participants are encouraged to share a story about love that made them go “ouch.” Whether it’s a love gone wrong, the pain of unrequited love, a tricky situationship, just a story of a horrible date, or an arguably-worse-than-normal-breakup; friendship break up.

No matter how difficult the situation surrounding love, you survived to tell the tale and The Moth is giving you the stage to do just that.

LOVE HURTS StorySLAM  – Brunswick

  • When: Wednesday, February 4, Doors open 7pm – 9:45pm
  • Where: Howler, 7-11 Dawson Street, Brunswick
  • Tickets: here

The Moth was brought to life back in 1997, in the living room of novelist George Dawes Green, who hoped to recreate the storytelling of his youth with his friends in Surrency, Georgia on the porch where the light attracted moths. Since its origin, The Moth has gained international acclaim with storytelling events all throughout the United States as well as Melbourne and London.

The Moth has toured internationally featuring stories from Elizabeth Gilbert, Hasan Minhaj, Kathleen Turner, Malcolm Gladwell, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, John Turturro, Molly Ringwald, Boots Riley, Krista Tippett, Damon Young, Mike Birbiglia, Rosanne Cash, Danyel Smith and Tig Notaro.

The Moth showcases a wide range of human experience. Starting only a theme, storytellers are able to explore the concept in unexpected and authentic ways. The storytelling shows blur the line between documentary and theatre and create an intimate and captivating experience for audience members.

Get ready, Brunswick!
