Blobfish Festival: A celebration of weird, sour, funky and wild beers is coming to North Melbourne this month

Blobfish Festival

Blobfish Festival - a celebration of strange beers - is returning to North Melbourne's Meat Market on Saturday July 23.

Headed up by the team at Footscray’s Hop Nation Brewing Co., Blobfish Festival runs across two sessions, offering punters the chance to sample interesting, rare and unusual beers from 19 top Australia and New Zealand labels.

First held in Melbourne in 2019, Covid restrictions meant the festival was cancelled in 2020, and proceeded in an online format in 2021. Now, the Blobfish Beer Festival returns to North Melbourne’s Meat Market this July, offering up an array of unique brews.

Just like the Blobfish – an Australian fish determined the world’s ugliest animal (somewhat unfairly) sour, funky and wild beers emerge from the depths of the beer scene – intriguing, slightly obscure, somewhat unknown, but always exciting. Punters are set to sip a diverse range of sours, saisons, barrel-aged brews, fruity concoctions and rare small-batch runs from the likes of NZ’s Garage Project, Sydney’s Wildflower Brewing & Blending, Tasmania’s Van Dieman Brewing, and Ballarat-based sour darlings Dollar Bill Brewing.

Hop Nation Brewing Co. founder Duncan Gibson said the festival’s return was long-overdue, following cancellations due to COVID-19 restrictions in 2020 and 2021. “It’s good to be back – the first Blobfish in 2019 was bloody epic – we sold out both sessions entirely, and we’ve been frothing to get back to the iconic Meat Market and see you all in person again,” he said.

“There’s a lot of pent-up demand among fellow blobfishes out there to get back to all things dank, unique and left-of-centre in the beer world.”
