Blitz Kids, ’60s club revivals and punk classics: Odeon Richmond is all about the throwbacks this month

Get ready to step into the time machine that is Odeon Richmond.

After opening in July, Odeon is continuing its tradition of bringing bustling nightlife to the streets of Richmond every weekend. Owners Eleni Tzaros and Bruce Butler are no strangers to the music scene and it shows by just how quickly they’ve managed to turn Odeon Richmond into an icon.

The lineup for November is nothing short of fabulous. With everything from post-punk to ska, there’s going to be something that tickles everybody’s fancy.

La Discotheque

Resident host, DJ Randy Lipz XXX takes over every Friday. Bumping all things disco and funk from the ’60s to the ’80s, you will certainly be groovin’ all night long to her mix. You can get down to see her do her thing at the same time and place each week, with some exceptions for special events.

This art celebration mixes live performance with photography and videography, bringing together the work of Artists Jed Lovell and Ray Hehr and live music from Tina & The Hams. Jed Lovell, exhibiting here for the first time in public,  focuses on the beauty of mother nature and will be indulged in for the first time. Ray Hehr will also be on display at the exhibition, specialising in organic abstract pieces and graphic design.

Both Lovell and Hehr have previously worked with Tina & The Hams on their releases as well as directing their music videos. The independent pop-rockers will have their last performance of the year at Photo/Graphic.

After 16 years of patiently waiting, fans of The Cure will be delighted to hear of the release of their new studio album Songs of a Lost World. Odeon will be hosting an album release party, where you can hear the new album in 5.1 surround sound.

As well as listening to the long-awaited release, DJ Randy Lipz XXX, Dj Bricolage and Dj Ultravelvet will be playing iconic tracks and related sounds until 1am. And why just listen to the album when you could watch it too? Screens will be playing The Cure’s BBC performance of Songs of a Lost World as the night goes on.

Victims of TISM Support Group – Pre-show Gathering

Fans of Melbourne-born alt-rock band TISM are encouraged to rally together at Odeon Richmond for a pre-show gathering before their headline gig 20 years in the making on November 9. The event is presented by the Victims of TISM Support Group, a long-time Facebook group for fans of the seven-piece masked band. DJ Randy Lipz XXX will be supporting as always with all the TISM-related tunes you’ll want to hear.

Love & War

In the midst of recording their debut album, Love & War are stripping down their music to create an intimate listening experience at Odeon Richmond. Singer-songwriter Scott Gibson will lay it down on the piano while Thomas Keating produces a raw and honest soundscape made of synth guitar and drums.

Joining Gibson and Keating is a collection of Melbourne music legends, including Claude Carranza on the guitar, Darren Farrugia on the drums and Lucas Torranto on the bass. 

Moving Toward the Pulsebeat

Odeon Richmond is bringing you back again for another night of celebrating all things punk (both pre- and post-). Whether you’re more goth or new wave, you will definitely be getting down to these classic sounds. The venue’s favourite DJs are getting abstract, turning the room into a 1977 time capsule for the night.

Just when you think you’ve gotten enough post-punk, Odeon Richmond comes back to give you more. Club Country is there to quench that thirst for new wave and alt-80s that you’ve been craving. Whether you’re into the  B-52s or Talking Heads, This Must Be The Place to spend your Saturday night.

The Rubber Soul Reunion

Go back in time to 1985, to relive The Rubber Soul, the infamous nightclub that highlighted all there was to love about the ’60s. From The Beatles to The Stones, The Rubber Soul single-handedly became the place to be. With lines down the block and the venue often overfilled by 650 people, it’s no wonder it’s coming back, joined by the original DJs Rob Griffiths and Michael Phillips. Everyone better Come Together to celebrate this iconic night of music.

Calling all club kids! Odeon is back with its 3rd instalment of Melb Blitz. Paying respects to the kids of Club Blitz, this night is about dressing to impress and those who indulge in the avant-garde. Odeon regulars DJ Randy Lipz XXX and DJ Ultravelvet will be feeding you a curation of glam rock, synth, industrial and related sounds all night.
