Best of Midsumma 2017: The Great Gay Goddess Gallery

Tell us about your show. The key theme works around the notion that our identities are expressions of the same female essence and that we each express different aspects of this fundamental nature. Considering ourselves and others in this way can dissolve the idea of difference, inspire curiosity and make it possible to wonder at the breadth and beauty of what being female is.

Where did the inspiration come from? The themes in this exhibition were inspired by an experience of one of my girlfriends.  She would be considered a Lipstick Lesbian and was made to feel very unwelcome when she visited a gay women’s venue for the first time.  It made her feel angry that she was made to feel like she didn’t belong because of the way she looked.

Why is Midsumma an important event on Victoria’s cultural calendar? To showcase the richness and breadth of the gay community and be a platform for positive messaging around acceptance and respect.

How does your show engage with queer culture? Identity can be a tricky, highly personal and political subject. My take in this show is to lighten the idea and appreciate that however you or other women identify it should be respected and celebrated.
