I get it really, I’m down with the kids, I’ve been to discotheques, I’ve walked down Swanston street past 1am – girls wear short dresses, I get that. But when a dress looks like a jumper I just find that distracting and strangely unnerving. ‘If she can go to a gig accidently only wearing a jumper, then maybe I could too’. A casual downward scan confirms that I have indeed remembered to wear pants. What a relief. Perhaps though, it’s deliberate, a trick for your eyes – to expect one thing and to perceive another. A magic show of sorts. Magic. Magic. Magic.
That is the reason I saw jumper-dress lady – she was a fellow audience member for The Curious Case Re-opened. A magician’s show with old school slight of hand card tricks set in a back alley theatre in Coburg. Part hipster grungy sideshow, part inoffensive children’s birthday party. I wasn’t sure exactly what to make of it and I found myself in an ambivalent dither. As a random thing to do it was nice – but is it a jumper or a dress?
