Bell Shakespeare’s ‘The Merchant Of Venice’ comes to Arts Centre Melbourne

In her first production with Bell Shakespeare, renowned and respected theatre director Anne-Louise Sarks will lead a stellar cast – including Australian award-winning actors Mitchell Butel and Jessica Tovey – in a modern reimagining of the legendary black romantic-comedy.

Detailing the trials of a merchant in Venice who must default on a large loan provided by an abused moneylender, Bell Shakespeare’s The Merchant Of Venice explores the lines between righteousness or compassion, and tolerance or hate, that still remain relevant over 400 years after it was written.

Rich with both bawdy romantic hijinks and the contrasting brutality of its challenging themes and biases, Bell Shakespeare shall no doubt provide a masterfully nuanced interpretation for all to enjoy.
