Behind the beat: The hidden business struggles of music workers

Words by Staff Writer

Victorian music workers are being forced to develop business and legal skills on top of their creative talents, with new research revealing most juggle multiple roles just to survive.

Released today at the inaugural Music Data and Insights Summit, the Victorian Music Development Office’s Skills & Roles report exposes the harsh reality facing those who keep our music scene alive.

The research, in partnership with RMIT University, reveals a sector where burnout, financial stress and skill gaps threaten the sustainability of our cherished music industry.

The study surveyed 212 workers and conducted 21 extended interviews, representing 324 different paid music roles across Victoria. The findings paint a sobering picture – 54% of music workers maintain portfolio careers with multiple concurrent roles, and only one in five have a single full-time position.

Nearly half work more than 40 hours weekly across all their roles, with over 10% clocking 50+ hours. Despite this dedication, financial rewards remain scarce, contributing to increasing stress levels throughout the sector.

The research highlights that 61% of music workers use business, financial and legal skills – areas where many lack formal training. Meanwhile, soft skills like communication and problem-solving emerged as critical for over 80% of professionals.

The pandemic has only exacerbated existing problems, with 66% of music jobs lost during lockdowns compared to a 19% reduction across the broader arts sector. This exodus has created knowledge gaps as experienced mentors leave the industry.

The VMDO is responding with several initiatives including the Leg Up program, which recently supported 37 Victorian music professionals with grants for micro-investments, expert advice and professional development.

Over coming months, the organisation will expand its popular Experts in Residence program and relaunch its long-term mentoring Fast Track Fellowships program to support music professionals building global networks and professional opportunities.
