Immersive event Be_Hear/Now returns for 2021, celebrating Ballarat’s rich music and arts culture.
Building on last year’s inaugural event, The City of Ballarat and Creative Ballarat has announced the return of Be_Hear/Now, a feast of music, art and place in the regional city.
The hyper-local program of live music, spoken word performances and art experiences previously ran over three consecutive Friday nights in November in three hidden locations, with the events showcasing the breadth of Ballarat’s creative community.
Due to Covid, the performances were all live-streamed from inside derelict bacon factories, quirky motels and bowling alleys with the intention of celebrating Ballarat’s unique heritage and rich music and arts culture while connecting people again through shared experiences.

Returning to celebrate the regional city with a strong live music lineage, Be_Hear/Now. is again celebrating music, arts and place in collaboration with Ballarat artists and performers, with the additional support of mentorship and career development.
Eight Ballarat artists are set to take part this year, including producer Juno Mamba, singer-songwriter Skyscraper Stan, experimental pop artist Floc, folk-rock band Grove, local duo No Man’s Land, psychedelic-rock musician Moonlover, electro-pop powerhouse LASHES, and The Sam Boon Quintet, comprising some of the most sought after session musicians in Australia.
In a bid to not only adapt and adjust creative enterprises, Be_Hear/Now. is providing opportunities for an arts sector that’s been ravaged by the current downturn.
Not only do these artists represent the arts and music in Ballarat in a really holistic way, but they will also be given access to professional mentoring from industry professionals that will help give them an opportunity to progress their professional careers.
There will also be an opportunity to meet and greet the other participants of BHN21 to talk about their personal experiences and offer support to each other.
For artists, the final product will be a 25 – 30 minute professionally filmed collection of live performances, with a short intro by each artist which artists can then use to further their careers outside of BHN. It will be premiered on the BHN website, and shared across multiple social media platforms, including the social media channels of all participating artists.
While the exact format of Be_Hear/Now. is yet to be announced, the event promises to celebrate and provide a launchpad for talented local artists through these unique live music experiences.
