Baxter’s Live celebrates 15 years with a stacked run of free gigs

Words by staff writer

Baxter's Live is celebrating 15 years with a packed lineup of free shows this December.

The Fitzroy venue, formerly known as Baxter’s Lot, has become a cornerstone of Melbourne’s independent live music scene since opening its doors in 2010. Nestled on Brunswick Street, Baxter’s Live has earned its reputation championing emerging local talent night after night, its bluestone walls and chandelier-lit interior providing an intimate backdrop for artists finding their feet and regulars honing their craft.

For its 15th birthday celebrations, the venue is hosting 11 free shows across two weeks, showcasing the diverse talent that has made Baxter’s a launchpad for Melbourne musicians.

The lineup features venue regulars and rising local talent in equal measure. Tejo D’Cruz, a multi-disciplinary musician of Sri Lankan and Indian heritage who also books artists for the venue, performs twice across the fortnight, bringing his soulful sound to the stage on 12 and 18 December. Rock-pop singer-songwriter Lewis Toms, who released his debut EP Vol.1 in September and even recorded a live album at Baxter’s, appears on 13 and 20 December.

Multi-instrumentalist Woody Samson caps off the celebrations on 21 December with the Final Show 2025, a fitting send-off from one of Melbourne’s hardest-working performers. Born in Maffra and playing trumpet from age seven, Samson now performs up to five nights a week across Melbourne, creating high-energy cosmic pop that reimagines 80s sounds with a futuristic twist.

Other artists across the fortnight include Margot Trotta, Mya Rogers, Xander Cuming, Simone Bertanza and Lewis Ciavarella, a blues and folk artist who found early attention through The Voice.
