Barney McAll Set to Transform Federation Bells

bells.jpg

As part of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, the Melbourne native will be joined by a five-piece ensemble, featuring a range of instruments including Moog guitar, acoustic bass, electric piano, trombone, shakuhachi flute, drums, as well as Barney’s own home-made instrument called Chucky.

The piece, Transitive Cyles, has been composed especially for the Federation Bells, and will serve as a tribute to some of Australia’s most revered jazz composers.

A second specially commissioned work of McAll’s will also play on the bells every hour on the hour of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. It features the Federation Bells alone and will go into the bank of more than 200 compositions that get played regularly on the bells through its daily schedule.

As part of the celebrations, The City of Melbourne is also launching the Federation Bells app giving everyone the chance to make the Federation Bells in Birrarung Marr play, simply by tapping your phone screen.
