The Corner Hotel has revealed the 2018 recipient of its annual Corner Awards, Northern Territory rapper Baker Boy. Devised as a way to recognise and celebrate Aussie talent breaking the mould, the Corner Awards offer each year’s winner a huge prize package as well as a headline gig at the venue.
The 21-year-old Indigenous rapper, Danzal Baker AKA Baker Boy, has quickly risen to fame – his unique style of incorporating his culture into his music by rapping in the Yolgnu Matha language, representative of his roots growing up in the remote communities of Yurrwi and Maningrida, proving massively successful. Baker Boy’s sound has landed him on stages at the likes of St Jerome’s Laneway Festival, Golden Plains and Groovin’ The Moo, with his tracks ‘Marryuna’, ‘Pressure’ and ‘Black Massive’ garnering massive acclaim.
With previous Corner Award winners including Sampa The Great and Cable Ties, it’s safe to say Baker Boy is in good company. As this year’s winner, Baker Boy will perform a headline show at the Corner Hotel as well as receiving a prize package including a pressing of 150 copies of a limited edition 7″ vinyl single, a $2000 cash prize, rehearsal time at Bakehouse Studios, $1000 towards artwork costs from Mushroom Publishing, a two week poster run from Plakkit, 50 free t-shirts from Sound Merch and a full-page ad package from yours truly.
