Thank your lucky stars, because according to the United Nations, we’re living in the 12th happiest country. The international organisation has just released the results of its 2023 World Happiness Report and our fair nation has secured a solid position on the chart.
The results of the report are based on a three-year average of personal reports from people from 137 nations. The report measured various factors including GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, perceptions of corruption and dystopia plus residual.

Although the report noted a dip in joy in recent years due to factors related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the happiest country hasn’t changed in the last six years. If you’re really in need of a little extra joy, perhaps take a trip to Finland – the chart-topping country has a significantly higher score than the rest.
Its Scandinavian neighbours are in pretty positions as well, with Denmark in second place, Iceland in third, and Sweden and Norway in sixth and seventh respectively.

On the bottom of the list was Afghanistan, which is likely a result of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the area. As for us, well, we were beaten ever so slightly by New Zealand in 10th place and we ranked just above Canada.
We’ve hung on to our position since last year’s ratings and have typically placed around 11th or 12th on the list since the report began.
