Artisan Guns : Hearts

Hearts is the second EP by New Zealand alternative rock band, Artisan Guns. Comprising of capricious dynamics and pop hooks, the four piece band move slightly away from the folk elements displayed in their debut EP, Birds And Bones, to bring you the unpredictable, inspiring energy that is Hearts.

In just six tracks Artisan Guns take listeners on an experimental journey, delving into elements of pop and even electronic genres. Hearts opens with the mellow, acoustic sound of North, a track that could have easily been featured on Birds And Bones.

This first song places both the band and listeners into their comfort zone, beginning the EP with what may have been easily predicted; soft, acoustic guitar with sweet vocal melodies and an overall folk-rock sound. But this comfort is quickly diminished as, without a second of silence, the progressive sound of electric guitar, emphatic drumbeats and distinct percussion instruments breaks through as Without You begins. It takes Matthew Hope’s distinctive vocal style, where an abundance of lyrics are used to create an almost rhythmic – instead of melodic – sound, and combines it with danceable pop music, tearing up any hope of a repeat of their previous EP.

Going Back In Time , as the name suggests, brings the EP back to Artisan Gun’s acoustic-folk roots, but it brings with it a new air of maturity and substance. The rhyming lyrics sounding out a predictable love story may seem cliché, but what this song lacks in lyrical originality, it makes up for in unpredictable dynamics and stick-in-your-head melodies. Into The cold is another example of the band moving further towards pop elements but their individuality comes through in creative vocal harmonies, which are intensified by the minimalist approach taken in theirinstrumental section.

The End , although it is the most insignificant track on the EP, surprises listeners with the subtle electronic elements in the vocal effects and bass line. Hearts finishes with the refreshingly original pop rock song Brand New Game that leads onto an instrumental secret track leaving listeners wanting more.

Hearts is full of creative, insightful tunes that illustrate the true diversity and individuality of Artisan Guns. Fans of Birds And Bones may be disappointed at the lack of simple acoustic folk-rock songs but it is clear that the band have found comfort in a new, original sound that is easily appreciated. Hearts is a refreshingly unique EP and is a worthy purchase.
