Art History Remixed

Award-winning Aussie artist, Arlo Mountford, has an exhibition at La Trobe University Museum of Art that puts a new spin on historical paintings.

Selected works by award-winning Australian artist, Arlo Mountford, will be showcased at the La Trobe University Museum of Art (LUMA) from February 21 until April 21.

The exhibition is called The Vanishing Point of History, and it delves into art history and pop culture through animation, installation and sound.

Displayed on TV screens, a purpose-built viewing platform and a wall-size projection, the art explores 21st century culture, and resembles an art historical game of Where’s Wally?.

The Triumph, one of Mountford’s main works on display, draws from 1562 painting The Triumph of Death, by Renaissance painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder. In this work, Mountford takes viewers through each scene of this famously complex painting, by interweaving art historical, pop cultural and political references.

"The Triumph  is art history remixed," says Ryan Johnstone, exhibition curator.

"Mountford modernises the scenes painted by Bruegel with contemporary symbolism, like Jimi Hendrix on guitar, and presents it in his trademark hi-tech, low-fi aesthetic."

You can see The Vanishing Point of History at the La Trobe University Museum of Art, Ground Floor, Glenn College, Bundoora Campus. Free admission.
