Olivia Rodrigo’s debut at Rod Laver Arena last night was nothing short of spectacular.
The dazzling lights, set design and costume combined with the raw talent of her voice made the performance an incredible listening and viewing experience.
What stood out to me when I first walked into the arena was the sea of women – teenage girls with their mothers, best friends and lovers all in purple, red and pink co-ordinated outfits. At that moment, it was easy to feel as if the pinnacle of the girlhood experience was to be at an Olivia Rodrigo concert.

I have never felt a sense of belonging like I did sitting through this show. Rodrigo is able to articulate the intensity associated with growing up as a woman in such a beautiful way, from moments of heartbreak and frustration to camaraderie and joy.
Rodrigo has this incredible ability to be vulnerable and raw in her music that is incredibly moving to see live. Her performances of Drivers Licence and Making The Bed were particularly emotional. I saw girls in the crowd with mascara running down their cheeks as they screamed the lyrics (me included).
What is interesting is that she can be simultaneously high energy and theatrical. Her performances of Bad Idea Right and Get Him Back had the crowd jumping up and down like crazy to the point where I could feel the ground vibrate. My favourite moment was when she got everyone to scream as loud as they could in All American Bitch – I could feel a collective catharsis leave the room.
There is something to be said about the production quality of her performance. The lighting, set design, graphics and use of backup dancers really enhanced the experience as an audience member.
In an enchanting highlight of the evening, stars tumbled down from the ceiling as Rodrigo flew across the stage atop a crescent moon, coming in closer to interact with her audience while singing her song Logical. She ended her set by bringing the vibes back up with Get Him Back, prompting a final explosion of confetti. The energy from the crowd was palpable.
I left the arena in complete awe. Rodrigo’s effortless talent and ability to be so authentic as an artist is a testament to why has become so renowned in the music industry, and rightfully so.
Her live performance was an emotional rollercoaster in the best way – one minute you’re crying your eyes out, the next you’re stomping up and down in a rage and the next you’re hugging whoever’s closest to you. It was an incredible privilege to experience.
