Based on Bret Easton Ellis’ infamous 1991 novel and the 2000 film, this savage stage adaptation brings the sharpest satire straight to Prahran. With Riverdale’s Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa on book duties and a killer soundtrack by Spring Awakening’s Duncan Sheik, this version comes with fresh teeth and a Melbourne edge.
At the helm is local directing heavyweight Mark Taylor (Bright Star, Parade, Next to Normal), whose knack for emotionally explosive theatre promises to make this iteration of American Psycho an unmissable ride. If you’re into pitch-black humour, piercing social commentary and synth-laced ’80s nostalgia, think Phil Collins, Tears for Fears, New Order and Huey Lewis and the News, you’re in for a wild night.
Set in the greed-is-good Manhattan of the late ’80s, American Psycho – The Musical dives headfirst into the chilling double life of Patrick Bateman: a wealthy investment banker with a pristine skincare routine and a serious penchant for murder. Expect high-fashion horror, perfectly tailored chaos, and a disturbingly catchy soundtrack.
And yes, before you ask, casting for Melbourne’s very own Patrick Bateman is still under wraps, but keep your eyes peeled. It’s sure to be a bloody brilliant reveal.
Get ready, Melbourne, Bateman’s back, and he’s dressed to kill.
