You haven’t made someone laugh until they’ve done it in the face of death. Amelia Jane Hunter’s how Dear Endora is about pushing people to their limits as a professional bushwalking guide.

What’s the story behind Dear Endora?

It’s about wanting to say something about the worldwide charlatans at play, the blatant disregard for the human condition and those who claim to drink llama milk straight from the teat! It’s also about the allure of creating another character that is ever so closely related to me…OK, is me, and those incredible bottles of pinot noir that set off a series of cringe-worthy events that escalated into a police escort from a baby shower.”

You won consecutive MICF’s Moosehead Award in 2007 and 2008, hell yes! How does it feel?

I felt blessed and very lucky. I think I won the first one because the MICF’s secret voyeuristic nature was keen to see if I really would parade around with men’s genitals in my pants for a month (2007’s Amelia Jane Hunter Is Keith Flipp) and then the second because I did and thus deserved the affliction of birth canal trauma/foetal oxygen deficiency being trapped behind big sister Hannah Gadsby as identical twins in 2008’s Meat The Musical. I loved that MICF stretched their imagination in supporting mine.”

Do you find working as a professional bushwalking guide has benefited your comedy?

Most definitely! One-woman shows are born on top of the King George Falls in the North Kimberley in front of a group of dedicated clients who have only narrowly survived cyclonic downpours, flash floods, pack floats, crocodile-infested rivers, weeks of dehydrated foods and unfortunate e-coli outbreaks. Moments like these tend to be fairly groundbreaking for the creative spirit.”
