After more than a decade and a half, American alt-rock pioneers Throwing Muses are finally returning to Australian shores this summer.

The Massachusetts-formed trio, who helped define the college rock sound of the ’90s, will bring their Moonlight Concessions tour to five Australian cities in December 2025, with their new album of the same name dropping this month.

Led by the incomparable Kristin Hersh alongside bandmates David Narcizo and Bernard Georges, the group will showcase their signature off-kilter sound that earned them cult status across three decades of boundary-pushing music.

  • Saturday 6 December – Factory Theatre, Sydney
  • Sunday 7 December – Crowbar, Brisbane

Their upcoming album Moonlight Concessions, described by Pitchfork as “a stunning return to form,” sees the band circle back to their experimental roots, featuring Hersh’s characteristically sharp lyrical vignettes backed by abrasive yet captivating musical arrangements.

The record follows their acclaimed 2020 release Sun Racket, which reestablished the band’s credentials among both long-time devotees and a new generation of alternative music fans discovering their distinctive sound.

Throwing Muses’ origin story dates back to Hersh’s high school days, where the initial lineup came together before going on to release a string of critically celebrated albums throughout the late ’80s and ’90s. Their innovative approach to songwriting and performance helped carve out new territory in the alternative landscape, influencing countless bands in their wake.

The group’s last Australian tour took place in 2009, making this upcoming visit a rare opportunity for local fans to experience their intense live show. Known for their raw energy and Hersh’s mesmerising stage presence, these performances promise to be among the most anticipated alternative rock shows of the summer.

Throwing Muses have maintained their artistic integrity throughout their career, never compromising their unique vision despite industry pressures and changing musical trends. This dedication to their craft has earned them a fiercely loyal fanbase and continued critical respect.
