DRMNGNOW: MINYERRA
words by staff writer

Yorta Yorta artist Neil Morris brings ambient electronics and sonic lore to the Oratory at Abbotsford Convent this Saturday.

MINYERRA takes over the Oratory at Abbotsford Convent this Saturday 8 November for an evening where ambient electronics meet cultural ceremony at dusk.

Neil Morris,  better known for his hip hop work as DRMNGNOW, shifts gears with this Yorta Yorta sound project that channels the buzz emanating from sacred redgums and waters of Kaieltheban land.

Sound collages built around atmospheric textures and pulsing rhythms explore the spaces between country, ancestors and spirit. Morris draws influence from where Indigenous music intersects with electronic sonics, while nodding to Sun Ra, Flying Lotus, Brian Eno, Boards of Canada and early Detroit techno. It’s about sound as expression that connects living beings on Yorta Yorta country through analog synth textures and field recordings.

Proud Wurundjeri man Thane Garvey-Gannaway joins the evening, bringing over 15 years of work with Wurundjeri Corporation. His experience spans cultural heritage fieldwork, land management, policy and currently education and events. Through hundreds of Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremonies plus countless cultural walking tours, Garvey-Gannaway has deep practice in sharing Wurundjeri Country with others.

He’s also an active Music Victoria board member and works in the music industry as event organiser and DJ, connecting cultural preservation with contemporary music scenes.

Liquid Architecture operates from Collingwood Yards as Australia’s leading organisation for artists working with sound and listening. Programming sits where contemporary art meets experimental music, making MINYERRA a natural fit for their approach to pushing boundaries around sonic experience.

As dusk settles over the Oratory, expect immersive atmospheres where cultural significance pulses through electronic textures. Morris’s step away from hip hop into ambient realms creates space for different kinds of connection; ethereal sound that links land, ancestry and spirit through carefully layered electronics and field recordings captured on country.
